What in the world could possess thousands of people to be out and ready to walk 5 kilometers long before the sun comes up? — A great cause.
We had the privilege of attending the CHOC Walk in the Park this past Sunday. Not only that, we had the opportunity to attend as media. It was a first for us on both counts. We’d never participated in a CHOC Walk before and we’d never participated in anything as media before. If you’ve visited TDD for very long, you probably know that we are big on hope and encouragement around here. We couldn’t help but jump at the chance to help cover the wonderful work done by CHOC and use this platform to share and help get word out. (If you aren’t familiar with the CHOC Walk, it’s a fundraiser for Children’s Hospital of Orange County that is hosted at Disneyland.)
We woke up at 2:30 AM in order to make the 90 minute drive to Disneyland—coffee was a most welcome ally. When we neared the Park, we realized that this was no ordinary day at Disneyland. Traffic on Ball Road was backed up for blocks and we had to resort to some clever tactics in order to make our media check-in time.
After we checked in, we were escorted through Downtown Disney and the Esplanade, both of which were filled with people wearing comfortable shoes and CHOC Walk shirts.
Immediately we could see that this was not your average crowd. These people were fervently dedicated to their cause. There were more signs than we could read and more stories than we could tell. The unifying factor for this diverse group and their many stories — the health, welfare and happiness of children. What better place to celebrate and support these values than Disneyland? Walt created Disneyland for children and parents to have a place to enjoy together. CHOC does their best to make sure that’s possible.
As everyone waited for the opening ceremony to commence, a DJ kept things upbeat – and by that of course I mean that he kept everyone awake.
Before long, it was time to walk and things kicked off with pyrotechnics at the castle and confetti on Main Street.
Walkers made their way through Disneyland and we ran all over the place trying to capture some of the special moments. Characters and cast members were out in force to cheer walkers on. Even a few characters that rarely make appearances showed up.
It was an incredible experience to participate in the CHOC Walk and if you’ve never done it before we highly recommend it. If you have done it, then you know already how rewarding it is.
