Am I the only one who feels this way, or has Mickey’s Fun Wheel become an iconic symbol of California Adventure? Every time I make my way towards Paradise Pier I always find myself looking for that Mickey. It’s really what has made this ferris wheel so special. I remember the first night I saw World of Color. While waiting for the second show to begin, I noticed from the distance, the fountains dancing in front of the wheel. It just seemed so perfect. Since then, I just can’t seem to take enough pictures of this beauty. I caught this one as a warm sunset blanketed the park.

  1. Kevin’s pictures are always interesting to me. His approach is different than Matthew and Michaela’s. There is still a capturing of a moment of magic and beauty, but Kevin often seems to observe the structure of his subject, the geometry and physical, measurable patterns created by the object he espies through the lens.

Almost always I know that a photo is Kevin’s by the presence of straight lines or patterns of repeating curves. Not every photo of his takes this path, but it is a strength of Mr. Crone’s to find those amazing moments of mathematical precision and then coax the magical light into his camera.

Here we have Mickey’s Fun Wheel, but note the way the photo is composed. Just slightly to the side, just enough to minimize the contrasting patterns of California Screamin’, and we are witness to an almost uninterrupted vision of the radiating spokes and a nearly complete view of the circle of the wheel. The stillness of that circle, paused in the morning just at sunrise, just before the crowds arrive; the serenity of the of the park emanating through perfect balance of the patterned lines; there is magic in the math. There is order here, but FUN order.

And who is the leader of this orderly club of fun?

It is called Mickey’s Fun Wheel for a reason!

May I please ask for more images of repeating patterns of form and beauty?
